Every thought you think and every belief you have affects how you feel. Too much stress or fearful negative thinking can actually play a big part in disease formation and in recovery. This mind body connection is often overlooked in modern medical treatments. Often doctors treat patients for chronic conditions that start out fairly mild but evolve into more serious conditions. the reason conditions become worse because negative emotions affect your health.
This may seem far-fetched, but the body becomes vulnerable to germs and viruses that are always around it when the immune system becomes impaired. The immune system can become weakened when stress causes the body to create a more acidic climate. Another way negative emotions affect your health is by causing your muscles to tense and increase pain in the back, neck or cause headaches. Poor emotional health may cause many uncomfortable symptoms: digestive problems, constipation, changes in appetite, sexual dysfunction, heart palpitations, insomnia, high blood pressure, and weight changes.
What you can do about negative emotions that can affect your health! This is my favorite part!
People who have consistently good health have often stumbled upon positive ways of looking at life and dealing with problems that those with chronic illnesses may not have learned. But this positive thinking can be learned. If you suspect that your emotions are effecting your health you have many resources at your disposal. There are so many wonderful resources for learning to heal your emotions that I am only going to have room for a few of my favorite resources.
Louise Hay is the "mother of positive thinking". She has written numerous of books on affirmations and the connection between physical symptoms and beliefs. You can find audio as well as books at her site. Her book You Can Heal Your Life is one of my favorites. Mark Dyer is another empowering writer and speaker who has insights that can help break negative thinking habits and help you to live an amazing life. You will find a wealth of information at his site.
One of my favorite writers on the subject is Steve Pavlina, a personal development blogger and speaker. His book Personal Development for Smart People is highly empowering. Many people have been raised with a victim mentality and this kind of negative emotion can definitely effect your health and your performance throughout your life. Steve Pavlina has a powerful blog and audio as well that help to break out of the mindset of the victim.
If you are working at a job that is unsatisfying, this can really effect your health, especially if you don't know that there is any hope of actually doing something you like better. One of the main messages of Pavlina's site is that you don't have to stay in a job you don't like. Another key to breaking out of a cycle of negative emotions is to break away from people who do not encourage your growth and happiness.
Another one of my favorite teachers on the art of joy is Rama at www.evernewjoy.net. He is a healer and teacher of meditation. Rama's message is that we are here to enjoy life and that our bodies are our friends. Often times we become fearful of our bodies or feel that we have no control over what is happening to us and this is not a good emotion for health! At evernewjoy.net you can listen to hours of free podcasts, watch videos and learn body activations that help you to focus on your strength and beauty as a human being.
